Autopsy and Reconstruction features paintings by Vancouver artist Andrew Dadson and Brooklyn artist Mike Rader. Each uses a different strategy to transform the canvas and the paint into another version of itself – new and unexpected.

Dadson uses paint as a sculptural medium, building it into thick accumulations that are scraped and shaped with a variety of tools.  In these new “Restretch” works, the painted canvas becomes a relief, and the pigment’s tactile and physical properties come to the fore.  With their thick sculptural frames of paint and topographic sensibility, they push and expand the boundaries of the canvas.

Rader's paintings are the result of literally opening up the dialogue between himself and the work through physically cutting into the painting to expose its hidden “insides” and unseen dimensions. The tearing, cutting, and painting is a direct equation to the physical act of excavating the space of the painting and his own internal space.
