Echoes will return and reveal far more features a painting installation by Vancouver based artist Russna Kaur. Kaur’s practice has engaged with painting as a space of possibility, play and experimentation – one intimately entangled with the complexities of living – both its pleasures and adversities. At 330g, she creates an immersive, overwhelming experience of colour. For Kaur, colour can serve as a marker of energy and joy but also as a mask or a tool that can be used to distract, deflect and protect. In her paintings and her life, colour provides both an entry point and a known distraction into deeper meaning and representation. 

Kaur’s paintings at 330g expand and adapt to their surroundings as elements of the painted surface extend and break through the frame to other surfaces becoming unhinged and free. Coinciding with her site-specific installation at Remai Modern, RBC Emerging Artist Series, Kaur’s 330g work reveals the beginnings of the line work and forms prominent in her large-scale work at the museum. Through this iterative process of exploration, Kaur investigates ways to make the invisible visible and questions what goes on beyond or beneath the surfaces we can see.

Russna Kaur (b. 1991, Brampton, ON) holds an MFA from Emily Carr University of Art and Design. In 2020, Kaur received the Tak Tanabe Painting Prize for emerging BC painters and the IDEA Art Award and is the recipient of numerous other scholarships and residencies. Selected solo exhibitions include Remai Modern (2022), Wil Aballe Art Projects, Vancouver, A Room With a View Gallery, Toronto (2021), Burrard Arts Foundation, Vancouver (2020). Group exhibitions include Gordon Smith Gallery, Vancouver (2022) and Kamloops Art Gallery (2021). Collections include Audain Art Museum, Vancouver Art Gallery, Surrey Art Gallery and the Gordon Smith Gallery of Canadian Art.
